Effective Friday, April 22, 2022 (Earth Day!), Bridge Street Market has removed single-use plastic and paper bags from checkout. We believe that by removing single use paper and plastic bags from checkout, we can improve our neighborhood and make the West Side a better place to live, work, and shop.

Reusable bags are both convenient and good for the environment – did you know you can fit more items in fewer bags when you use a sturdy, reusable bag? It’s true! Choose from a variety of reusable bags at Bridge Street Market able to hold up to 50 pounds of groceries per bag.

FAQ – Common Questions

Q: Why did you remove single-use plastic and paper from checkout?
A: We have removed single-use paper and plastic bags from checkout to remove waste and improve recycling. We believe our shoppers (that’s you!) will partner with us on this initiative to make the West Side a cleaner neighborhood. Thank you in advance for your partnership!

Q: When did this change take place?
A: It all started on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2022!

Q: Will paper or plastic bags still be available?
A: No, but we will have reusable bags made from over 60% post-consumer materials available starting at 10 cents each. We will also have a selection of other reusable bags for purchase, including Public Thread’s upcycled billboard bags.

Q: What if I forget my bags at home?
A: If you forget your bags at home, we have a selection of reusable bags made from over 60% post-consumer materials available starting at 10 cents each. We encourage you to bring these bags back – they can be used up to 125 times – or recycle them in our recycling bins at the entrance!

Q: What reusable bag options do I have?
A: When shopping at Bridge Street Market, all of your bag options will be reusable and made from recycled materials. Bags start at just 10 cents!

Q: What about paper bags for liquor purchases or plastic bags for produce?
A: We will still offer small paper bags for bottles purchased at our liquor desk due to safety. The paper bags we source are made in Michigan from 40% recycled materials. At this time, we are also not removing single-use plastic bags from produce. We encourage you to purchase reusable bags for produce, recycle the bags you use in our plastic recycling bins at our entrance, or stop using produce plastic bags altogether – many fruits and vegetables have natural protection in their inedible peels.

Q: Can I recycle bags at the market?
A: Yes! Our recycling bins at the entrance accept a variety of plastic bags and flexible plastic films, including: grocery bags (#1, #2 and #4 plastics), case overwrap, produce wrap, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, ice bags, packaging air pillows, LDPE/HDPE films, food storage bags, and bread bags.
